Kurds and Alevis

Life in the Margins

The term "minority" is somewhat misleading in the context of modern day Turkey. Kurds and Alevis actually make up a significant percentage of the population (see graphic)

Data from The Kurdish Project and The European Policy Centre

Although the Alevis and Kurds make up significant percentages of the population, nationalistic rhetoric has evolved in such a way that the Turkish government sees no room in their country for these groups.

What does it mean for there to be "no room" in Turkey for these two groups?

Cultural Annihilation

The Turkish government has sought to remove these groups from public consciousness.

Blind Legislation

Violence

Historically and in the present day, the Kurds and Alevis have been the targets of violence.
